The Legacy corporation is a student social justice and entrepreneurial club at Vincent Massey Junior High, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Legacy Corporation is a dedicated group of students that focuses on creating a better world for everyone by encouraging accountability, generosity, and inclusive compassion in all of its members.

Each year, the club is stewarded by a dedicated teacher and led by new and returning students. Legacy students work hard fundraising by running school-based businesses and events such as bake sales, school dances, multicultural fairs and more. Over the years Legacy has become extremely successful in its fundraising endeavors, highlights including raising $28,000 in a single year to build a school in Senegal, providing scholarships to children in need and supporting local community initiatives such as the food bank.

In 2008, the Legacy Corporation began partnering with the Uganda Partnership. Together the Legacy Corporation and the Uganda Partnership are working towards the common goal of providing a foundation for empowerment and sustainability through participatory research. In alignment with the participatory philosophy of UP, the students of the Legacy Corporation fundraise for whichever projects are deemed most urgent and important by our partners in Uganda. Some examples of projects the Legacy Corporation have fundraised for include:

  • the very first crop of land upon which the Legacy Community Primary School currently operates

  • the construction of initial infrastructure for the Legacy Community Primary School, including the main hall

  • start-up capital for the BWA micro-loan program, enabling widow members to start income generating businesses

  • a clean water and mosquito net campaign

  • facilitation costs for a local healthcare initiative to bring HIV medicines to the community

  • student sponsorships

In addition to Legacy's financial support they have also connected in a personal way with the women and children in Uganda. Legacy students and widows and students in Uganda have exchanged handmade baskets and clothes, letters, songs, and more over the years. In representation of the connection made between Canada and Uganda, the names of students of the Legacy Corporation are listed on a sign underneath a waving Canadian flag in the compound of the Legacy Community Primary School. Students at the school walk by this sign many times a day, often stopping to read the names. It is simply one example of the important legacy of the work done by the students of the Legacy Corporation.
